Matthew 25: This chapter starts with the parable of the 10 bridesmaids. They went out looking for the groom, each with a lamp. Only 5 brought extra oil. The 5 foolish ones (those that didn’t bring oil) ran out of oil, had to go buy more (because the other 5 wouldn’t share), and missed their chance to enter with the groom. The bridesmaids represent the people and the groom represents God. The notion here is that people need to remain faithful so they are always prepared. This means that people need to always follow Jesus’ teachings.
The next parable is the parable of the valuable coins or the parable of the talents. In it, we learn of a landlord who has to leave. He leaves 5 coins with one servant, 2 with another, and 1 with a third. The first two doubled the amount of money they had through work and the third buried his coin. Upon the master’s return, he was pleased with the first two because of what they had done and he rewarded them. He was angry with the third, calling him lazy for doing nothing. The third servant lost what he had and thrown out. At first I was kinda shocked by this. But putting this into context with the rest of this chapter helped me to better understand (I think) the point of this parable. We are supposed to use our gifts for good, not become complacent and lazy.
The last part of this chapter is interesting. It is all about what will happen to the people based on their actions. Those who did good things will be rewarded and those who did bad things won’t. The interesting part what these “things” are and how that relates to what’s going on in the world, and especially the US, right now. Here’s what Jesus told those who were to be rewarded (CEB p. 55 NT):
35 I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. 36 I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me.’
The people ask him when they did that for him and he responds as follows:
‘I assure you that when you have done it for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you have done it for me.’
Those who did not help the most needy are not to be rewarded.
This just makes me think so much about what we are currently dealing with in our country (3/7/2019). It really does seem like those in power are more worried about themselves than about those who are in most need.
