11/27 Reading (1 Chronicles 25-27; Romans 12)

1 Chronicles 25: Organization of the temple musicians by David.

1 Chronicles 26: First part of this chapter focused on the gatekeepers that David organizes. They were the guards of the sanctuary. According to the notes from NRSV, “the gatekeepers open the Temple in the morning; administer the use of the vessels, including the holy utensils; take charge of the flour, wine, spices, and oil; and perform administrative service on behalf of the king” (NRSV, p. 609). The second half of this chapter focused on treasurers, regional officials, and judges.

1 Chronicles 27: The first part of this chapter focused on the military leaders. According to the notes from NRSV, this was a big part of David’s legacy. The next part focused on the leaders of each of the twelve tribes of Israel. This was followed by the civil servant leaders of professions like the treasuries and various areas of agriculture. Finally, David appoints royal advisors who would help Solomon after he leaves.

Romans 12: This is an interesting chapter. Paul urges people to live good lives. He urges them to not think too highly of themselves, to put everything they have into their gift: “If your gift is teaching, devote yourself to teaching” (12.7). Glad to see that one in there. He talks about loving people, hating evil, be enthusiastic, happy with happy people, cry with sad people, etc.
